For more than two decades, the streets of New York have been a source of inspiration for Fine Art photographer Phil Penman. There are a thousand stories in the city, learning to find these visual stories is the focus of this Masterclass weekend.

Phil will guide the group through the streets, highlighting many of his favorite locations, while demonstrating his approach to "seeing", metering light and creating the dramatic compositions found in his work. From practical, hands-on sessions in the field to editing and review of the images created, his weekend intensive will provide insights into his creative process from start to finish.

APRIL 18-19TH 2026

This two-day intensive workshop with Phil Penman offers a deep dive into contemporary street photography, focusing on visual storytelling, anticipation, dynamic composition and critical editing.

Known for his powerful urban imagery, Phil Penman challenges participants to work instinctively and intentionally in the street, responding to light, movement and human interaction in real time. The workshop is strongly practice-oriented, combining extended shooting sessions with structured editing and review in the classroom. Participants will spend each morning photographing on the streets, followed by afternoon sessions dedicated to editing, sequencing and group critique, learning how to transform individual frames into strong, coherent visual narratives.

This workshop is about decision-making, timing and authorship — developing a personal approach to street photography through practice, reflection and feedback.

This intensive two-day workshop with Phil Penman offers an in-depth immersion in contemporary street photography, with a focus on visual narrative, anticipation, dynamic composition, and critical editing.

Internationally recognized for his powerful urban photography and for having documented life on the streets of New York for over 25 years, including historical events such as 9/11, Phil Penman is a key figure in contemporary street photography. His work is part of institutional collections, has been published in some of the world's leading media outlets, and is studied as an example of visual coherence, authorship, and commitment to reality.

On this occasion, Phil will bring his way of seeing and working to the streets of Madrid, using the city as a living stage to explore the relationship between urban space, light, rhythm, and human presence. Madrid thus becomes a photographic laboratory where his method is applied: observing attentively, anticipating the scene, and reacting instinctively yet consciously to what happens in front of the camera.

The workshop has a decidedly practical focus, combining extensive outdoor photography sessions with structured blocks of editing and review in the classroom. Each morning will be dedicated to street photography, while the afternoon sessions will focus on editing, sequencing, and group critique, learning to transform individual images into solid, coherent, and personal visual narratives.

This workshop revolves around decision-making, timing, and authorship, and is designed to help participants develop their own approach to street photography, supported by constant practice, reflection, and direct feedback from one of the most influential photographers in the genre.

This workshop will help you become a more complete and effective photographer, capable of tackling any situation. Phil will show you his entire process, from finding subjects to using composition and light to enhance them and get the most out of a scene. He will then guide you through his editing process.

You will travel through the iconic places of Milan together with Phil Penman and the Leica Akademie. Phil will take you to his favorite places to photograph, showing you his way of working and observing his surroundings
