Photographers are often described as hunters or fishermen. A good photographer needs to know how to be both, and when to apply these approaches in a street photography scene. Phil Penman's work often encompasses urban landscapes, the capture of spontaneous moments, and street portraits. This workshop will help you become a more complete and effective photographer, capable of handling any situation.

Phil will show you his entire process, from finding subjects to using composition and light to enhance them and get the most out of a scene. He will then guide you through his editing process.

You will walk the iconic locations of Venice alongside Phil Penman and Leica Akademie. Phil will show you his way of working and observing what surrounds him.

March 21-25th 2027

Day one is dedicated to theory and a welcome dinner. The following four days will be spent shooting in some of Alan and Phil’s favourite areas of the city, from the busy streets of Shibuya and Shinjuku to the quieter, more traditional atmosphere of Asakusa, and beyond.

The workshop will focus on making photographs: learning to read a scene, working with available light, finding strong compositions and responding to the unexpected moments that make street photography such an interesting playground.

Throughout the week, Alan and Phil will share their own approaches to photographing on the street, working alongside participants and offering practical advice and feedback. The workshop is also an opportunity to explore different ways of approaching the same place and, ultimately, to strengthen your own way of seeing.

Availability is limited so the group remains small enough for plenty of individual time with both photographers.
