PHIL PENMAN X DUBLIN PHOTO FESTIVAL MASTERCLASS - MAY 1ST - 3RD 2026

  • WELCOME

My approach to seeing the world largely comes from my background as a press photographer. I'lI  introduce you some of my methods and techniques that have helped me over the past 30 years as a professional photographer.

We will explore the streets of Berlin in some of the most iconic locations as well as some less well known and challenge ourselves to ask  "How do we capture it differently?"

We have all seen the postcards! Now its time to create something nobody has ever seen before.

    WEATHER AND WALKING

In May, Dublin experiences mild, spring-like weather with average daily highs of 15°C–16°C (59-60) and lows of 9°C–10°C (48-50) . As one of the sunniest and driest months, it is ideal for travel, though rain is still possible. Days are long, with sunset around 9:20 pm

Bring warm clothing and wet weather gear in case of rain. Shooting will continue in all weather conditions.

    HOTEL RECOMMENDATIONS

We would recommend booking a hotel close to the Dublin Photo Festival ,Charlemont Square, Dublin 2, Ireland as the first days photographing will start from this area and Alexanderplatz is easily connected by public transport to the last days start point.

    TRANSPORT

The best international airport for accessing Dublin is by Dublin Airport

Connections to central Dublin are easily available by taxi or public transport.

Attendees are responsible for their own personal passports or alternate method for entry into Ireland, all transportation (airfare, bus, trains, taxi), hotel accommodations, meals, and any other expense.

     EQUIPMENT RECOMMENDATIONS

Phil generally utilises a full range of focal lengths from wide-angle to telephoto (21mm- 280mm).

If you have a selection of lenses in this range, it is recommended you bring them with you to allow you choice over

the course of the workshop. It is not however necessary to carry all your lenses on each day.

Phil generally carries two fixed prime lenses, a 35mm and 75mm. If you are unsure of what to bring please email admin@philpenman.com for advice, listing which gear you have already.

  • PHIL PENMAN, Biography

    PHIL PENMAN

    Biography

The British-born, New York-based photographer Phil Penman has documented the ever-changing scene of New York City’s streets for more than 25 years. In his career as a news and magazine photographer, with a large body of work in such publications as The GuardianThe IndependentThe New York Review of Books, among others, he has photographed major public figures and historical events. In particular, his reportage following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center has featured on NBC’s Today show, as well as on the BBC, History Channel, and Al Jazeera, and his images have been included in the 9/11 Memorial and Museum’s archives.

His work covering the pandemic lockdown in New York City has been acquired by the U.S. Library of Congress, whose collection holds work by such great Depression-era documentarians as Walker Evans and Dorothea Lange. Besides showing at Leica galleries in New York, Washington, D.C., Boston, and London, Penman’s signature street photography has appeared in international exhibitions as far afield as Venice, Berlin, and Sydney.

He also tours the world teaching workshops on photography for Leica Akademie. He was recently named among the “52 Most Influential Street Photographers,” alongside such legends as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Sebastião Salgado, Diane Arbus, and Garry Winogrand. Penman’s first book, Street, published in 2019, became a best-seller and was featured at the Museum of Modern Art in New York
