Paris Photography Masterclass: Essential Guidelines & Etiquette

Gear & Preparation

• Attire: Please ensure you are equipped with sophisticated, weather-appropriate outerwear and rain protection. We will curate our artistic experience rain or shine.

• Camera Proficiency: To fully immerse yourself in the curriculum, attendees must possess a refined, working knowledge of manual camera controls, specifically aperture and shutter speed and ISO.

• Power & Presence: Kindly bring ample spare batteries. To preserve battery longevity and maintain a mindful, uninterrupted connection with your environment, we kindly request that you refrain from reviewing images on your LCD screen during active shooting sessions.

Itinerary & Logistics

• Physical Commitment: Expect to walk a minimum of 5 miles of inspiring exploration on foot each day.

• Exclusive Access: To ensure personalized instruction, enrollment is strictly limited to 10 participants.

• Accommodation Recommendation: We advise securing your accommodations in the vicinity of the Eiffel Tower, or in the area of the 8th arrondissemont as the majority of our curated photographic journeys commence in this iconic area.

• Comprehensive Itinerary: A bespoke schedule detailing our meeting points and exclusive logistics will be provided prior to the commencement of the masterclass.

• Tuition Details: The investment for this masterclass covers exclusive instruction only. Flights, luxury accommodations, travel insurance, culinary experiences, and local transportation are not included.

• Reservation & Cancellation Policy: Due to exceptional demand, complimentary refunds are honored exclusively up to 60 days prior to the commencement of the curriculum.

• Processing Fee: Approved refunds will incur a non-negotiable administrative fee of $150.00. The final refunded amount will reflect your initial payment less this processing fee.

ABOUT PHIL

Phil Penman (born 1977) is a British-born, New York-based street and documentary photographer renowned for his striking black-and-white images of urban life.

Early Life and Career Beginnings

Born in Briantspuddle (near Poole), Dorset, England, Penman received formal training in photography from the Berkshire College of Art and Design. He initially worked for the local newspaper, the Wokingham Times. In 2000, he moved to Los Angeles before relocating to New York City in January 2001 to work for the celebrity news agency Splash News. Early in his career, he photographed prominent public figures and celebrities (such as Jennifer Lopez, Bill Gates, Madonna, and Michael Jackson) while building a profile as a news and magazine photographer.

Journalistic & Historical Reportage

Before focusing primarily on personal street work, Penman's editorial photography appeared in major international publications, including The Guardian, The Independent, The Daily Telegraph, Paris Match, National Geographic, Time Magazine, and The New York Review of Books.

Some of his most historically significant work includes:

• The September 11 Attacks: He captured powerful reportage of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. His work from that day is preserved in the permanent archive of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum and has been featured across major networks like the BBC, NBC, and the History Channel.

   

   

• COVID-19 Pandemic Lockdown: His photographic documentation of the empty, ghostly streets of New York City during the pandemic was acquired by the U.S. Library of Congress, placing his work alongside historical documentarians like Walker Evans and Dorothea Lange.

With a career spanning over 25 years chronicling the modern metropolis, Penman has earned substantial industry recognition:
