Leica Gallery Singapore is proud to present Street Scenes, a solo exhibition by internationally acclaimed, British-born and New York-based photographer Phil Penman. Marking the Singapore debut of works from his celebrated latest book of the same name, this exhibition invites viewers on a striking visual journey through the shifting, atmospheric landscapes of the world's most iconic cities.

For over twenty-five years, Penman has walked the pavement with his Leica, developing a signature gaze deeply rooted in the classic tradition of street photography. While New York City remains the pulsating heartbeat of his archive, Street Scenes expands his horizon, mapping transient moments, chance encounters, and quiet solitudes across New York, London, Paris, Naples, and Tokyo.

Rendered in his trademark high-contrast, cinematic black-and-white style, Penman’s images elevate the ordinary into the symbolic. A lone figure navigating a sudden blizzard on Fifth Avenue, a quiet reflection in a rain-slicked Tokyo alley, or a fleeting gesture lost in the shadow of towering architecture—each photograph captures a fraction of a second where light, shadow, and human emotion perfectly collide.

Penman’s work operates far beyond mere documentation. By stripping away geographic markers and chronological sequence, the exhibition creates a singular, shared urban territory. It is an environment where time feels suspended, and the chaotic rhythm of the modern metropolis is distilled into quiet, poetic narratives.

"It's like the hunter and the fisherman. You have to bide your time, wait for the picture to play out, and sometimes you only have seconds to capture it."
