This two-day intensive workshop with Phil Penman offers a deep dive into contemporary street photography, focusing on visual storytelling, anticipation, dynamic composition and critical editing.
Known for his powerful urban imagery, Phil Penman challenges participants to work instinctively and intentionally in the street, responding to light, movement and human interaction in real time. The workshop is strongly practice-oriented, combining extended shooting sessions with structured editing and review in the classroom. Participants will spend each morning photographing on the streets, followed by afternoon sessions dedicated to editing, sequencing and group critique, learning how to transform individual frames into strong, coherent visual narratives.

This workshop is about decision-making, timing and authorship — developing a personal approach to street photography through practice, reflection and feedback.

Objectives

  • Develop a strong narrative approach to street photography
  • Improve anticipation and decisive timing
  • Strengthen composition in complex urban environments
  • Work confidently with natural light
  • Edit and select images with narrative intention
  • Build visual coherence within a body of work
  • Understand and articulate aesthetic choices
  • Receive in-depth feedback on individual work

Amateur and professional photographers, photography students, visual storytellers and photojournalists interested in street photography and urban narratives. Previous photographic experience is recommended.

Technical requirements

  • Camera with manual controls
  • Lenses
  • Memory cards and spare batteries
  • Laptop for editing (Lightroom, Capture One or similar)

IMPORTANT NOTES:

  1. Designed as an intensive learning experience, this workshop aims to consistently support the development of each participant. The structure is defined, but the content remains flexible to the needs of the group, allowing themes and rhythms to emerge naturally.
  2. Travel, accommodation, local transport and meals are not included in the workshop fee.
  3. While Leica equipment is available for testing and practice, participants are encouraged to bring their own gear. This allows guidance and exercises to be tailored to each person’s technical reality, ensuring more consistent results.
  4. For the practical outdoor sessions, participants are advised to wear comfortable footwear and clothing appropriate to the weather conditions.
  5. This workshop will be conducted entirely in English.
