    Join renowned Fine Art Street Photographer Phil Penman for a highly exclusive, one-to-one intensive workshop exploring the iconic and intimate locations of New York City. This full-day, bespoke session is an unparalleled opportunity to transform your photographic practice under the guidance of a recognized master.

     

    Penman, known for his signature, dramatic black-and-white images that utilize deep shadows and striking contrast, will personally guide you through his creative process. The workshop is designed to teach you how to:

     

     

    • Master the Use of Light and Shadow: Learn Penman's techniques for identifying and leveraging the interplay of light and dark to create cinematic depth and mood in your urban scenes.

     

    • Improve Your Composition: Move beyond basic rules to understand layered imagery and balance, allowing you to create complex, thought-out photographs that draw the viewer’s eye through the frame.

     

    • Capture Those Everyday Moments: Develop the patience, observation, and intuition necessary to blend into the city's rhythm and capture unscripted, fleeting human moments that tell a powerful story.

     

     This is a one-to-one session, meaning the entire 8-hour day (from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM) is entirely tailored to your individual needs, current skill level, and specific artistic goals. The course is not only about capturing the image but also about the full photographic workflow:

     
    • The day includes practical instruction on equipment selection, lens choice, and techniques for telling a story in a single image.

     

    • The session concludes with a comprehensive image review and editing demonstration, providing an insight into Penman’s post-processing workflow to maximize the impact of your work.

     

    Be prepared for an immersive experience that requires dedication—the workshop involves a minimum of 2 miles of walking and proceeds in all weather conditions, reflecting Penman’s belief that some of the city's most evocative moments are found in the rain or snow.

    • How to layer images to give your work a more complex and thought out look
    • Sessions are from 8am to 4pm  and require about 2 miles of walking
    • 2 Hours will be spent reviewing your images and editing them by Phil. He will give you an insight into his photography workflow and how to get  the best out of your images.
    • Workshops proceed in all weather conditions, some of Phil's favorite images are taken in the rain or snow.
    • Advice on Social media as well as personal brand building and how to best reach your desired audience.
    •  Due to demand, refunds are only given up to 60 days prior to start of course. 
     
    - In the event that a refund is issued, a processing fee of $150.00 will be charged. This fee covers administrative costs and is non-negotiable and non-refundable. The final refund amount will be the original payment less this processing fee.

    PHIL PENMAN

    Biography

    The British-born, New York-based photographer Phil Penman has documented the ever-changing scene of New York City’s streets for more than 25 years. In his career as a news and magazine photographer, with a large body of work in such publications as The GuardianThe IndependentThe New York Review of Books, among others, he has photographed major public figures and historical events. In particular, his reportage following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center has featured on NBC’s Today show, as well as on the BBC, History Channel, and Al Jazeera, and his images have been included in the 9/11 Memorial and Museum’s archives.

     

    His work covering the pandemic lockdown in New York City has been acquired by the U.S. Library of Congress, whose collection holds work by such great Depression-era documentarians as Walker Evans and Dorothea Lange. Besides showing at Leica galleries in New York, Washington, D.C., Boston, and London, Penman’s signature street photography has appeared in international exhibitions as far afield as Venice, Berlin, and Sydney.

     

    He also tours the world teaching workshops on photography for Leica Akademie. He was recently named among the “52 Most Influential Street Photographers,” alongside such legends as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Sebastião Salgado, Diane Arbus, and Garry Winogrand. Penman’s first book, Street, published in 2019, became a best-seller and was featured at the Museum of Modern Art in New York
