Street Scenes with Phil Penman: Leica Mexico Opening Night

Overview Leica Gallery Mexico City is pleased to present the debut Latin American exhibition of British artist Phil Penman.

UK-born and New York-based photographer Phil Penman has spent over 25 years documenting the ever-shifting streetscapes of New York City. His signature black-and-white approach to street photography has cemented his reputation as one of the modern metropolis's premier visual chroniclers.

Before gaining acclaim for his personal street work, Penman built a prominent career as a journalist and magazine photographer. His reporting has appeared in prestigious international publications, including The Guardian, Paris Match, National Geographic, Time Magazine, The Independent, and The New York Review of Books. Throughout this period, he photographed major public figures and captured key historical events.

His dedication to documenting history is perhaps most evident in his powerful work following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center. This poignant reporting has featured in major media outlets such as NBC, The Today Show, the BBC, the History Channel, and Al Jazeera. His compelling images are now preserved in the archives of the 9/11 Memorial & Museum as a vital record of that tragic day.

Penman’s contributions to documenting modern American history continue to earn top-tier recognition. The U.S. Library of Congress acquired his moving images covering the pandemic lockdown in New York City. This acquisition places his contemporary documentation alongside the work of legendary Depression-era documentary photographers such as Walker Evans and Dorothea Lange, underscoring the cultural and historical value of his photography.

His signature street photography, marked by stark contrasts and an evocative sense of timing, has been widely exhibited in galleries around the world. Most recently, his work was featured as part of Leica’s 100th anniversary celebration.

Penman is also an enthusiastic educator who travels globally leading photography workshops for the Leica Akademie. His expertise and influence in the field earned formal recognition when he was recently named one of the "52 Most Influential Street Photographers"—a list honoring him alongside genre legends like Henri Cartier-Bresson, Sebastião Salgado, Diane Arbus, and Garry Winogrand.

His books have brought his work to an even broader audience:

• Street (2019): This bestseller captured the raw energy and diverse life of New York’s boroughs.

• New York Street Diaries (2023): This follow-up also achieved bestseller status and was presented at the prestigious Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, further solidifying his place in fine art photography. The book sold over 7,500 copies within two years of its release.

• Big New York (2024): A volume featuring his work alongside photography legends Elliott Erwitt and Thomas Hoepker.

• Street Scenes (2025): His latest book, which launched at number one in Amazon's Street Photography category and continues to sell worldwide.
