Photographing the street requires observing, anticipating, and understanding the rhythm of the city.

Phil Penman, one of the most prominent contemporary exponents of street photography, will share his career path, creative process, and understanding of the genre as a way of narrating urban life in this talk. It will be a unique opportunity to get a close look at the perspective of one of the great visual chroniclers of the modern city, included in the list of the “52 Most Influential Street Photographers,” a selection that places him alongside legends of the genre such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Sebastião Salgado, Diane Arbus, and Garry Winogrand.

Penman was born in the United Kingdom and has lived in New York for over two decades, a city he has made the focal point of a body of work distinguished by its powerful black-and-white visual language. His ability to capture the intensity and poetry of urban life has established him as one of the most important voices in contemporary photography. Before developing his personal style, he built a distinguished career as a news and magazine photographer for publications such as  National Geographic, Time Magazine, The Guardian, Paris Match,  and  The Independent . His images from September 11, 2001, are part of the permanent collection of the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, while his record of the lockdown in New York during the pandemic was added to the Library of Congress. He is an international educator with the Leica Akademie.
